Youth Planning Committee

During her keynote address at the inspire4life: Summit on Youth, Karen Pittman, Executive Director of The Forum for Youth Investment, challenged the community to increase the odds for children and youth success by changing how we do business.

As a follow-up, on June 30, 2008, over 150 stakeholders joined United Way and our state government agencies to learn about a proposal to partner with The Forum for Youth Investment to lead Massachusetts' public and private leaders through the Ready By 21 approach to develop a comprehensive statewide action plan for youth.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive response, United Way has moved forward to make this happen. The timing is right. We will build on and support the excellent work of numerous public and private commissions, committees, task forces and coalitions. The value of this process is to coordinate an action plan that aligns these efforts by developing a common language and goals, integrated strategies with shared responsibility for outcomes, as well as action steps to get us where we want to go for youth.

Together and with involvement from YOU,we hope to change the odds for youth by changing the way we do business.

Increase the odds for children and youth by changing the way we do business

During her keynote address at the inspire4life: Summit on Youth, Karen Pittman, Executive Director of the Forum for Youth Investment, recognized that measurable change in youth outcomes does not happen overnight. It can even take as many as 5-10 years. Sustained must start with committed leaders, the community demand for change, and the motivation to develop shared ownership around a common vision.

why massachusetts?

All youth should have the opportunity to grow up in a safe, supportive environment that provides equal access to opportunity.

Massachusetts has consistently ranked high among states that provide positive opportunities for youth: Our students' educational performance was rated the highest in the country by the 2005 National Assessment of Education. We are aggressively reducing the number of uninsured through a national model of healthcare reform, our economy, supported by a world-class higher education system, remains strong and resilient. And our overall crime rate is reaching an all time low.

Action Planning Team and Timeline for Process

After an open invitation nominating process, over 300 people were identified for the 50-member Action Planning Team to steer this process. The work will be completed between October, 2008 and January, 2009.

Your Voice

We Want Your Voice

Because this work depends on the assets of a larger constituency than any 50-member planning team can represent. An interactive on-line exercise will feed into the overall decision-making process. We will do this through two channels: the youth voice and all stakeholders. Please return to this site on September 22 so that your voice can be included. In addition, we will periodically be posting updates.
