Listen

ListenOur youth have a lot to say about what is important to them. As they grow up and begin to discover their strengths and face new challenges, they want to be heard. They want to be part of the discussion and participate in transforming our communities.

There are nearly 1 million young people in Massachusetts today.

Youth and the economy...

I was wondering the other day, about how the declining economy seems to come up in almost every conversation I've had.

How are you doing today?: "Good, would be better if the dow (stock market) was up."

What did you do this weekend?: "Not much, saved money."

Want to go shopping?: "I really shouldn't."

Inspired during the Holidays

Youth Artwork Demonstrates the Spirit of the Holidays

Youth from local organizations participated in a holiday art contest. Combining their creativity and their best art skills, youth drew pictures which represented things they like to do with their mentors, families and friends during the winter holiday season.

The winning piece, submitted by Kim Ortega, age 10, from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lynn, was selected from over 45 other contestants. Kim's drawing, entitled “Donation Month” will serve as the cover Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley's holiday greeting card this year. We chose Kim's artwork because it not only presented a delightful holiday scene, but it also aligned closely with the message that United Way is trying to promote: that when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all… that’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Check out all of the photos below or visit our Flickr site to see the descriptions of each drawing or send an e-card to your family and friends!
